Tenneco Towers is an artificial reef created by five oil platforms. Three of the rigs are reachable within recreational diving limits, top decks are 60, 80 and 100 feet depth. Moderately experienced divers may want to confine their diving to the 60-foot level.

The dive site
Tenneco Towers is unusual among Fort Lauderdale-area dive sites because it isn’t a shipwreck at all. It is a collection of decommissioned offshore oil-platform structures that were deliberately placed as artificial reefs.
The structures originally operated in the Gulf of Mexico, where they were used by the Tenneco Oil Company for oil and gas operations. When they were retired, Tenneco donated them for use in South Florida’s developing artificial-reef program. In October 1985, the massive steel structures were transported by barge around Florida and deployed off Hallandale Beach, near the Broward–Miami-Dade county line. Sources generally give October 3, 1985 as the deployment date.
The diving
The most striking feature is the vertical relief. Three of the five platform sections are within recreational diving range. Depending on which structure the boat ties into, divers generally encounter the upper portions at roughly 60–70 feet, with the structures continuing down to approximately 100–110 feet. Two additional sections are in roughly 190–200 feet of water and are technical dives. Some of the deeper structures were tilted substantially by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
The amount and variety of fish life is one of Tenneco’s biggest attractions. Divers commonly encounter angelfish, hogfish, snapper, grunts, jacks and grouper, along with large barracuda cruising around the structure. Larger visitors can include Goliath grouper, sea turtles, tuna, rays and sharks.
