Originally the Dutch freighter Cornelis, the 128-foot Rebel was built in 1947 in Norway. She continued in service with different names and owners until the early 1980s when the government seized her for drug smuggling. She became an artificial reef in 1985.

The wreck
The wreck begins at a depth of 80 feet and sits in 110 feet of sand. The wreck was donated to the Broward County Artificial Reef Program by a local attorney who named it after his dog. Due to the depth, this wreck is best suited for divers with advanced training or equivalent experience.
The diving
The Rebel offers divers an opportunity to explore a sunken vessel that has become part of South Florida’s underwater ecosystem. Along with the wreck’s structure, divers can enjoy colorful marine life, fish congregating around the hull, and opportunities for underwater photography.
The main attraction is exploring the wreck itself, observing how marine organisms have colonized the vessel and how its structure provides shelter for fish and other reef inhabitants. Schools of baitfish often gather around the vessel, attracting hunting jacks and barracuda. Divers may also encounter groupers sheltering among the wreckage. Corals encrusting the hull add color and provide excellent subjects for underwater photographers.
