Christ of the Abyss • Sunday, July 17
Christ of the Abyss is a submerged bronze statue of Jesus Christ by Guido Galletti. The original was placed off the Italian Riviera in 1954. Additional copies of the statue were placed off Greneda in 1961 and Key Largo in 1962. We will also be making a second dive on the City of Washington.
The Site
The Diving
The reefs of the upper Keys are shallow — typically 40 feet or less. This makes this trip perfect for new divers as well as photographers. You’ll typically see a variety of fish and other aquatic creatures, as well as beautiful stands of elkhorn and staghorn coral.
The statue is located in approximately 25 feet of water near Dry Rocks, approximately six miles east of Key Largo. This falls within the National Marine Sanctuary, just outside of John Pennekamp State Park. The statue weighs more than 400 pounds. The concrete base to which it is attached weighs approximately nine tons.
