Neptune Memorial Reef • Saturday, May 9, 2026

Neptune Memorial Reef is a columbarium. This is a resting place for the ashes of the deceased. Unlike a normal columbarium, this one is underwater. Each person’s ashes have been mixed with a concrete substance to form statues and other objects. This then forms the basis for a thriving reef.

The site

Neptune Memorial Reef lies a little over three miles east of Key Biscayne. It currently occupies nearly an acre and will eventually extend to sixteen acres. The site consists of underwater roads leading to central collection of columns, benches, statues and other objects. Since it began in 2007, the original structures have been coated with coral which, in turn, has attracted schools of fish and other aquatic animals.

The diving

Neptune Memorial Reef lies at a depth of 40 feet. This makes it appropriate for certified divers of all experience levels. As you can see from the accompanying photos, the reef provides ample opportunity for both photos and video.

The reef is the resting place for a number of individuals, including famed chef Julia Childs.
