Part of the world’s third-largest barrier reef, Sanctuary Reef is home to an unusually rich assortment of aquatic life. Local dive operators have agreed to prohibit hunting here in order to maintain this diversity.

The site
Santuary Reef lies roughly one-half mile off Pompano. As with most of the Gold Coast, the current generally runs from south to north but can reverse. Depth typically maxes out at 60 feet but can go deeper. Because of the currents, this is almost always done as a drift dive.
The diving
Sactuary Reef has the same rich assortment of soft and hard corals we associate with all Broward County diving. Reef fish are abundant, and it’s not unusual to find nurse sharks napping under ledges.
